NCM Founding Member Karen Gale Andover, MA USA - Saturday, November 04, 2000 at 17:02:24 (EST) My condolences on your loss. Gregory J. Kissel Cincinnati, oh USA - Friday, November 03, 2000 at 20:47:06 (EST) We first met Dan and Karen through the Northeast Chapter of the NCRS back in 1986. As new members and new Corvette owners, they always made us feel part of the group - right from the start! Of course Dan put us on to the idea of the Museum and soon we were founding members. He was always a huge force behind anything to do with Corvettes, and that enthusiasm just spread to everyone. The world of Corvette will miss him, but his energy will carry on. Our sympathy goes out to Karen and family at this untimely loss. NCM Founding Member Geoffrey "Kim" & Lisa Collier <Tailhook3@home.com> Morrisville, PA USA - Friday, November 03, 2000 at 20:27:48 (EST) Thank you Dan. My sincerest condolences to your family. NCM Lifetime Member Bernd Sadler <bernd.sadler@wincor-nixdorf.com> Riedstadt, GERMANY - Wednesday, November 01, 2000 at 05:30:32 (EST) It was Sept 1994, labor day weekend, one of the best times of my life that I had meet Dan Gale. It was late in the morning, About 3.00 am( if I remember right.) I was there at the grand opening of the NCM, With me where some of my closest freinds. We were there on A mission for our corvette club, Desert corvette Assoc. To deliver a club jacket to be added to the NCM archive. Mr. Gale was still there greeting people. Although we where all very tired from the trip,we acted like kids in a candy store. Mr. Gale asked if we had a chance to walk thru the museum, we all laughed and said, were going back thru again its our sixth time! Mr. Gale laughed as big as he is in life.I guess what Im am stating here is, that even the 15 minutes or so we visted with Mr.Gale, the memory is still with my wife and myself. Just being a part of the West coast caravan to bowling green, to arrive at such a wonderful event, is beyond words. For those who where there, you understand what I am saying, and now to find out that we have all lost part of that event in our lifes is truly tragic. From my family to the Gale family, We are all very saddened by this loss. Mr.Gales memory will truly be part of mine. From the three vettes from arizona, Mickey&Susie,Lane&Patty,Kevin&Deannine kevin&deannine hackbarth <hitower@uswest.com> glendale, arizona USA - Tuesday, October 31, 2000 at 22:31:00 (EST) Dan: I'll miss very much seeing you at every major Corvette event in the upcoming months and years. You were always a true friend and supporter of Vette Vues magazine and I will treasure your friendship and encouragement that you offered to everyone in the Corvette hobby. Without your talents and deep dedication to the NCM, I do not believe the museum would have ever opened its doors and become the centerpiece for Corvette enthusiasts and owners from around the world, for now and future generations. Thank you, Dan, and rest in peace in a much better place. Please say "hello" to Zora and Larry for all of us Vette nuts! Karen: Our prayers are with you and your family and I do wish you the very best in the future without your beloved Dan. Thank You Chris, Deb & Robby Mitchell Richmond, VA USA - Friday, October 27, 2000 at 11:12:46 (EDT) On behalf of the members of the Capita Corvette Club in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, I wish to express my sympathy at the passing of Dan Gale. Having met Dan several times with Wayne Ellwood, I grew to appreciate how he actually lived for Corvetting and what the formation of the National Corvette Museum meant to him. Wendy Hall / Capital Corvette Club <wendyhall@sympatico.ca> Ottawa, Ont Canada - Thursday, October 26, 2000 at 20:32:22 (EDT) Dear Karen and family, I want to give you my sincerest condolences. For Dan to have made such an impression on those of us who knew him such a short time, I know your sense of loss is tremendous. Dan and I had many conversations on those late afternoons just after the Museum opened. It was hard to get Dan to go home in the afternoons--he was so proud of this place. Dan would come over to the admissions desk and always share a funny story about one of his adventures (usually Corvette-related). In October 1994 my college roommate died after being in a coma for almost a week. Dan insisted that I be off work to be with my friend at the hospital in Louisville. When I returned to work, Dan came over to the desk and asked for my friends' family's address. I was amazed when he sent them his condolences and some much-needed money. Dan had never met my friend, and I was just a part-time employee at that time. This is the Dan Gale that some people may not have known, and the reason Dan will always have a place in my heart. Dan had a good heart, and I will miss him. My prayers are with you and your family. Sincerely, Marty Cassady Marty <stephmarty@msn.com> Cassady, KY USA - Thursday, October 26, 2000 at 16:27:32 (EDT) I would like to extend my deepest heartfelt condolences to the Gale family. I am a lover of Corvettes and I am thankful for all of Dan's hard work and effort to make the NCM a reality. I know Dan's looking down from heaven with a huge smile on his face. Dave NCM Individual Member David Fishman <adfnassau@aol.com> Foothill Ranch, ca USA - Wednesday, October 25, 2000 at 17:31:20 (EDT) Dear Karen: The first time we saw Dan was on a video taken by members of the Tri-State Corvette Assn. of Pa containing memories with Dan From their VVV over a 5 year period. In 1998 we made our first VVV, anxiously awaiting our encounter with the infamous Danny Moon Gayle. Obviously he was far better in person than any video could ever record! As we read all of the memorial tributes to Dan, we realized how blessed we are to have shared at least two years of your husband's life. As someone said in the one of the tributes Karen, you and Dan were soul mates -- that's exactly as we saw you -- each complimenting the other. We send you our sincerest sympathy and prayers that your heart will go on -- and with God's help you will go on. Although Dan is apart from his loved ones he will ever be in your lives. As many of your friends have said, Tom and I belive that Dan has gone ahead to "break ground" for a place for the rest of his fellow Corvette enthusiasts so that when we join him he'll lead us to a place for "Corvette Parking Only" in the most angelic museum of all -- one that will last for enternity where we'll ever be in the company of those we loved hear on earth. My thoughts are with your family I this great loss NCM Lifetime Member Mike Walsh <tealvett@infi.net> Somerville, NJ USA - Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at 21:25:45 (EDT) This might seem like an unusual thing to say, but Mr. Gale used to come into Applebee's where I worked in college. I can still remember what he used to order! He made a great impression on me. He was funny and one of the nicest men! I am so sorry about your loss. I work for an interactive agency involved with cadillac.com and gmgoodwrench.com. Today I toured the cadillac museum and Mr. Gale came to mind because of the talks we briefly had when he would come in to eat. The Corvette museum would not be an enjoyable experience for all if it wasn't for him. Thank you. In the 12 years I had the privaledge to know him, he made me laugh at every turn. He will always be in our hearts and thoughts. NCM Lifetime Member Jim Smith <Corvettekid2@neo.rr.com> Mansfield, OH USA - Tuesday, October 10, 2000 at 10:49:09 (EDT) Dan Gale My Friend & Mentor First of all, may I express my deepest sympathies to the love one's Danny has left behind. No one knows why he left us, one could only assume he was needed somewhere else. Danny like everybody else, had dreams,a future,a life, and a familywho loved and admired him. The only difference between us was, Dan was fortunate enough to see his dream come to a reality. His persistance and devotion to his dream, was second to none. He saw the opportunity to achieve his goal, and seized it. This was an accomplishment of a life time. Since I met Dan and Karen, Decades ago, I have always tried to live up to his expectations, to judge shows fairly, work hard for our corvette weekend, and try my best to impress him with the Calendar. It meant a lot to me to get a call from him after such events, commending me for a good job well done. For all Dan Gale has done for the Corvette family and our solar system,(2moons), my accomplishments seem so small. From now on , every time I receive a brochure or news letter from the National Corvette Museum, I will think I am getting mail from my friend Dan Gale. For he is, and always will be, The Reason the Museum is there for everyone to enjoy. and in my eyes is the President of the Board, and will remain in our Hall of fame. Danny, for those of us who knew you well, and so loved your whit and antics, we will miss you, look for you in certain places, remembering the fun we had with you. Unfortunately life will not be the same without you any more. So Go now my Friend, To Paradise, and May the angles Guide You. May God Bless your Dear Family and Friends, and give them the strength to carry on.Amen It has definately been my pleasure to have called you my good friend. In the twenty years I knew Danny, he very quickly became the big brother I never had....offering advice, encouragement, support and the most wonderful friendship one could imagine. Dan and his lovely wife, Karen, complimented each other perfectly...they were true soul mates. My heart aches for Karen and the entire family in their loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you. It has been an honor and a privilege to have had Danny as a very special friend. Thank you, Dan, for the laughs and the love. We will never forget you. I met him at the Brickyard week-end. We have reminded friends since that time. We are going to miss him. We enjoyed many corvettes events with him & his wife. We believed in Danny's dream to have a museum that is why we are lifetime member, 2 founder members, Charter member & also have two bricks. We donated our decanters to the museum for five years to use for a display. We believe he should be in the Hall of Fame. AL & Diane NCM Lifetime Member Albert & Diane <Adow81@aol.com> Saugus, Ma USA - Monday, October 09, 2000 at 18:54:36 (EDT) I first met Dan in 1987 at the Monterey Historic Races. I was there to shoot a Chevrolet television commercial on racing. He approached me at the pit wall on Friday afternoon as the Corvette SS was going around the track. I didn’t know him, but for some reason he knew who I was and we started talking. He struck me as someone who really had perspective and vision. We immediately hit it off. We stayed in touch and less than a year later, I became the editor of Corvette Quarterly. Shortly thereafter, Dan invited me out to speak at an NCRS function in Lancaster, Pa. I spoke on the history of Corvette advertising. We remained friends from that day forward. NCM Individual Member Jerry Burton <gburton@cecom.com> West Bloomfield, MI USA - Monday, October 09, 2000 at 17:57:57 (EDT) The first time I met Dan Gale was in 1978 at Mountain Melee. It was at the event's "toga party", a sight to remember for sure. No matter what type of Corvette event we attended Dan was there. When our NCRS Chapter began Dan was there. I had the pleasure to be Northeast Chapter Judging Chairman while Dan was our President. When the idea of the National Corvette Museum came about Dan was there. I can't even begin to list the generous things he did for my family and myself. It wasn't that we were special, it was just the way he was. We were all proud of Dan as we watched the NCM take shape. I can't describe my feelings the first time I traveled down I-65 and the Museum came into view. I can only imagine how he must have felt. Zora Arkus-Duntov may be the father of the Corvette but Dan Gale, to me and my family, will always be the "Father of The National Corvette Museum". Good-bye Dan. Lyle & Lynn Hughes <lyle.hughes@compaq.com> Groton , MA USA - Saturday, October 07, 2000 at 22:03:33 (EDT) Dan Gale. There is not another one out there like him. I started to work for the National Corvette Museum in July 1994, getting ready for the Grand Opening. We were working out of the small Annex -- a lot of people and a lot of action for the small place. Dan and I were trying to get all the information together for readerboards for the exhibits and we could not concentrate. Dan said, "Betty I know where we can get some work done. Grab that box and follow me." I followed Dan out into the parking lot, he climed into the front seat of the Suburban and I climbed into the back seat. That's the first introduction I had to Dan's knowledge and love of Corvettes. He had a lengthy scenario about each exhibit, stories about Zora and Elfi and his involvement with getting the National Corvette Museum off the drawing board and helping make it a reality. Just as any working relationship we did not always agree but we always talked it out and met on middle ground. Dan, thank you for your contribution to the Corvette Community. Tom Pouncy <teppet@aol.com> Houston, Tx USA - Saturday, October 07, 2000 at 08:28:41 (EDT) Team ZR-1 sadly has to admit we not only lost a friend, but also a teammate. Dan not only understood we the Corvette owner but also supported us in our goals of enjoying the car and the friendships that came from being part of the family. No matter what left hooks were thrown at him he always was a gentleman and showed that he was a true leader for all of us. I've known Dan since 1995 and he always was a hoot to talk to via it be the telephone or by e-mail. No matter who you were he would take the time to stop what he was doing and listen to what we had to say. To me the NCM came from Dan's love of the Corvette and now Dan is forever part of it's history. He'll be greatly missed but never forgotten ! David NCM Family Member David Towns <DMTowns@AOL.com> Arlington, Tx USA - Friday, October 06, 2000 at 23:18:29 (EDT) Dan always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye that made you wonder what he'd be up to...I'll never forget Dan for his antics over the years. For example, at Mtn Melee - who can forget the time he was handcuffed to the large rock out by the west wing and the waitresses spraying him with whipped cream? I can hear his distinctive laugh right now. Karen, I'll never forget Dan's WONDERFUL sense of humor, his competitive spirit (especially during those road rallys!), his love for Corvettes and his generosity. He left a great gift to us all with the creation of the museum, and even though we haven't been able to make it there yet, we know when we do go, we'll be able to feel his presence. Dan, may you rest in peace, we love you and the wonderful memories we have of you will always be with us. Love, Bill & Elaine Paul Elaine Paul <epaul@nortelnetworks.com> Ayer, MA USA - Friday, October 06, 2000 at 22:54:55 (EDT) Although it has been too many years since we've attended a Corvette meet, it has always been comforting to know that Dan Gale was out there making the Corvette world a special place to be. We were deeply, deeply saddened to hear that Dan is gone, and we send our deepest sympathies to Karen, their family and all his friends. So many of our Corvette memories have Dan at their heart, and we will never think of Martha's Vineyard without remembering Dan's fun, enthusiasm, love and laughter. We always respected Dan's knowledge of everything Corvette, and often relied on his wit and wisdom when we were publishing Keepin' Track. He may not have created the Corvette, but he personally captured its spirit and preserved its heritage for generations of enthusiasts to come. He will be greatly missed. I remember Dan as a deeply enthusiastic man, who dedicated his life to make a dream come true for a lot of us in the Corvette hobby. He lived and breathed the NCM dream for a long time, and saw it built. He did what needed to be done to make it happen. He made many friends, and without his strong opinions and self determination, it would never of happened. I would be proud to be on his long list of respected friends. Dan walked the walk. May you and your family and friends find eternal peace. You will be remebered by all of us. Racer Dan NCM Lifetime Member Racer Dan Harrington <Dan73Vette@AOL.com> Des Moines, IA USA - Friday, October 06, 2000 at 21:37:34 (EDT) Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Karen and to Heather, Darrin, Peter, Chris and Robby. Dan was truely a unique individual who gave so much to so many. We consider ourselves most fortunate to have personally known Dan. After hearing so many stories about the antics of Dan at various Corvette gatherings it was most rewarding to finally make contact with such a hilarious individual. Dan gave all of us a real appreciation for life. We were amazed at the success Dan achieved in his efforts to establish the National Corvette Museum. There are many who have gone before Dan, and their names are known to many. Their images are in the museums and the books, but Dan will hold an even greater place in our memories. Dan was an integral part of all of us in the Corvette community. Dan will live on in our hearts as one of the true legends. To Karen and Dan's family: Thank You for sharing Dan with all of us for these many years. There will always be warm memories of Dan. His contributions were many and they were remarkable. To Dan: Thank You for being such a special person to so many people. We are most honored to be able to have been your friends. Thank you for all you have given to all of us. God Speed, Dan. I worked with him on the NCRS board, and always admired his vision for where the Corvette hobby could go to further the enthuiasts' enjoyment. He overcame many tough obstacles to see his vision realized and I admire his tenacity. I wouldn't be surprised if St. Peter isn't cruising in a vette with Dan's encouragment now. We knew each other only since 1992. It took you less than ten minutes to tell me I had the job. You ask me if I would assist you in making a dream become a reality. I accepted and you did it. Many times we stood toe to toe with clinched fists, and tears, but most of the time we laughed and we hugged. Dan, it was my pleasure to be swept along with "Hurricane Gale". Thank you for the great memories. You will be missed, my dear friend. Dan was that kind of person. I never really knew Dan that well, but when we ran into each other at NCRS National Meets, Bloomington or NCM there was this instant feeling you were rekindling an old friendship. There are numerous structures in our country that exist due to the vision and efforts of an individual, even though their name appears nowhere on the facade. To his many friends and admirers, the National Corvette Museum will always be "The House Than Dan Built". Godspeed Dan, you will be missed. Fred & Terri Munson <FTCPE74@AOL.COM> Fall River, MA USA - Friday, October 06, 2000 at 19:10:43 (EDT) I guess everyone has a favorite Dan Gale story. He was one of a kind. I cannot forget the first time I met him. Tim Thorpe had just completed a two-year restoration of Dick’s L-88 and brought the car to us in Bloomington. We were at Dale Smith’s Friday night party and the car was sitting under a cover in the corner. Dan and Corvette Mike began bidding against each other trying to persuade Dick to sell the car before it was even judged. The money was getting really serious and Dan realized that I was becoming upset. He thought it was because Dick was rejecting the offers. Heck no, I was afraid Dick would sell the car and I had not even seen the completed restoration. Later Dan and Karen became our good friends and Dan would call to talk to Dick. They always kidded each other about their very different accents—Boston vs. Appalachian Mountain English. Dan would ask how Dick was and then how the “wahfe” was. Dan was trying to pronounce “wife” without his Bostonian “i” but with a Southern drawl, as if he could! Karen, our thoughts and prayers have been with you and the family during these trying days and they will continue in days to come. We all know Dan is in a better place, but we and the hobby will miss the guy. We loved him and we love you. I met Dan through our local NE chapter of the NCRS. We will miss his cheerful character and sincere devotion to the Corvette. His everlasting contribution to all us, will always be his unselfish goal of ensuring that the dream of a National Corvette Museum would become a reality. Many years ago, at one of our local chapter meetings, I had the privilege of giving Dan my lifetime membership to the NCM. He accepted graciously, and from the twinkle in his eyes, we both knew that dream was a tiny step closer to fruition. Thank you Dan, for helping all of us preserve our Corvette passion. I can tell you that it is absolutely true that there would be no National Corvette Museum were it not for Dan. He was always giving of himself to others. Of all my memories of Dan, and there are thousands, I’ll never forget John Amgwert, Bill Clement and Dan on their backs doing “The Alligator” at the NCRS National Convention in Bend in 1989. You either loved or hated his plain-spoken style. Dan would say he didn't care one way or the other. But I suspect he really did. It goes without saying that there would be no National Corvette Museum today had it not been for him. He turned a nice idea into a genuine crusade. The NCM was his baby. It became his life. He was intelligent, sincere, sentimental and so unbelievably funny. There was also an incredibly sweet side to him, too. If you didn't know Dan personally, then I feel sorry for you. I've known the Gale family for over 25 years and cannot imagine the Corvette world and especially my world without Dan. In addition to his extraordinary work building the NCM, he was also instumental in the development of the New England Corvette Council. His guidance and visions will be sorely missed, not to mention his love and friendship. I refuse to remember Dan as I've seen him since that horrible day. I will remember him as he proudly gave me a personal guided tour of the NCM whenever I visited. I'll remember him driving his red Corvette with his hair flying in the wind and that smile on his face. I'll remember him in Carlisle, at the Corvette Shows, chasing me on a road rally (and sending me the wrong way on purpose!) and telling me jokes with that laugh of his. He was the only guy I knew who could say something totally off the wall and keep a straight face while he waited for my reaction. I would finally spot the corners of his mouth curling up and then we would both crack up laughing. I'll never forget my last conversation with him as he called me to give me a "Yingah" on September 17th. This is how I'll remember Dan. He will be alive in my heart forever.
