High Performance Driving Schools
Tired of winter, looking forward to the warm weather and getting your Corvette back on the road? Building on the success of our first High Performance Driving School, the National Corvette Museum is pleased to announce that our second school will be held at Putnam Park Racetrack in Mount Meridian, Indiana, approximately 50 miles west of Indianapolis. The 1.8-mile, 10-turn track has small elevation changes and large clear run-off areas. An ideal track for both the beginning student and the experienced driver, this track has seen major professional drivers testing their cars. Ron Fellows tested the C5-R at Putnam along with other rides and the list of pros includes Johnny O, John Heinricy and Andy Pilgrim to name a few.
The school is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, June 5-6, 2006. Once again we will have two sections for the beginner/novice group as well as slots for intermediate, advanced and instructors with room for a total of 70 students (not counting instructors). Students must drive either a coupe or FRC Corvette; convertibles are only permitted if they have an SCCA roll cage. The price will be $395 for members and $445 for non-members. The event price includes an event shirt and a banquet on Monday evening at nearby Walden Inn. Non-members will receive a one-year NCM individual membership with their payment. All students in the beginner, novice and intermediate level will have classroom instruction and will be accompanied by an instructor in their car while on track. Advanced students will be checked out for possible solo status.
Tech and check in will be at the HQ hotel on Sunday - late afternoon. The banquet will be on Monday evening at the Walden Inn located in nearby Greencastle. In early April registrants will receive their driver packages with details on tech preparation, hotels, routes and maps and other necessary information.
As our participants in the first HPDE discovered, there are more smiles per mile at one of these schools than you can ever imagine. And if the event alone isn’t enough to excite you, imagine having members of the Corvette engineering and production team as your fellow students. The excitement generated by the first event has caught the attention of none other than the incoming Corvette Chief Engineer, Tom Wallace who has given his support to this exciting event. In fact in addition to Corvette engineers as students, one lucky student just might have the Corvette Chief Engineer as their instructor! We will also have Gib Hufstader, longtime GM engineer, and GM racing affiliate, visiting Putnam Park and speaking at our banquet.
